Ecuador asks U.S. to extend ATPDEA
Ecuadorian U.S. Ambassador, Nathalie Cely confirmed that Ecuador has requested an extension of the ATPDEA, which expires in mid-2013.
Ecuador now depends only this benefit, as Peru and Colombia do not require this program after having Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with the U.S., which releases their goods tariffs. ATPDEA allows hundreds of Ecuadorian products exempt from customs duties entering the U.S. market.
Cely acknowledged that it is unlikely for Ecuador to get this extension because it is granted as compensation for the fight against drugs.
Cely acknowledged that Ecuador has low chances that this request is given, since this benefit is only granted as compensation for the fight against drugs.
