Syrian Ambassador Joins the Revolution

Nawaf al-Fares was the Syrian ambassador in Iraq.  After his defection, he accused the government of President Bashar al-Assad, of turning the ruling Baath into “an instrument to kill people.”

Al-Fares became the first Syrian ambassador to turn from his government since the uprising against al-Assad began in March 2011. Al-Fares resignation came less than a week after the announcement after the Brigadier-General Manaf Tlas, childhood friend of al-Assad and part of his inner circle, fled the country.

Unlike General Manaf Tlas, who deserted in silence, al-Fares said he’s “joining the revolution.”

The defection of al-Fares came as Britain, France, Germany and the US submitted a new draft that forces al-Assad to implement UN-Arab League envoy, Kofi Annan, peace plan in 10 days or face severe sanctions. (AV)
