The national strike called by social organizations took place yesterday in the historic center of Quito, but the protesters turned violent so the police had to intervene.
In the Plaza Chica the first clashes between a group of protesters and police occurred. With sticks, metal fences, rocks and burning tires, some twenty people attacked the policemen. Meanwhile, the police repelled the attack with batons and pepper spray.
The indigenous leader Salvador Quisphe, prefect of Zamora Chinchipe, denounced an aggression. With torn clothes and a blow on his face, the leader told El Universo that he was beating a drum when he was pushed by infiltrators towards a police cordon and while he was held his head was banged against the pavement and was released only after posting his retention on his personal Facebook profile.
