The president of the Association of Motorcycle Assemblers, Oswaldo Landazuri, recalled that this sector was -perhaps- the one that opposed the most to safeguards, since motorbikes are considered as working tool, a popular means of transport, which is acquired by the country’s poorest population. In addition, the sector has reached 20% of national parts and pieces.
He reiterated that a surcharge of 25% (safeguard) is too high for this type of product. Landazuri considers that safeguards are not the solution for overcoming an economic problem, a slowing economy.
On investments needed to reach the 20% component of national parts and pieces, “today, it makes sense to have less volume and more investment. What is happening now is that the investments made are not being recovered by economic actors.”
