An alleged persecution, intimidation and harassment was reported yesterday by leaders of social organizations, after being assaulted by police agents in the march held Wednesday afternoon in Guayaquil.
Luis Chancay, president of the Popular Front of Guayas, showed bruises on his neck and arms, and said that videos and photos are being analyzed to try to identify the agents who responded with blows the decision of the participants to continue the march.
He described the action of the attackers as an “ambush” and stated they would have referred to him as “this is the guy” when trying to hold him.
Gabriela Menéndez, leader of Women for Change, said that the protesters were mistreated inside and outside the Malecon Simon Bolivar. “When realizing that agents were blocking the street, some walked to advance to the 10 de Agosto street, but they only followed us, even though the majority of the protesters headed to the Pichincha street.”
