The Dean of the Law School at the Catholic University of Ecuador, Santiago Guarderas, when referring to the transitional provision of the constitutional amendments proposed by the president, that would prevent him from running for reelection in 2017, “is a trap for all Ecuadorians, and the truth is that they want to make fun of us.”
Including a transitional provision that does not allow the reelection of those who are currently on duty, in the case of the president and assembly members, means there will be a restriction on the right of participation against the conclusions of the Constitutional Court, which gave way to the process of constitutional amendments. Therefore, in the future, anyone will be able to sue the unconstitutionality of the amendments.
Another issue included in the amendments is to turn communication into a public service, and with this “they want to Cubanize us,” they want that communication in the country has one way, that the only truth is the truth of the government and that attempts our fundamentals rights that are unique to human dignity.
