22M Demonstrations: Indigenous Mobilization Reaches Quito
The strategy for entering Quito, Ecuador is a secret of the directors of the political party Indigenous Nationalities Confederation of Ecuador (Conaie for its Spanish acronym). To avoid that the information gets leaked to the government they will keep to themselves the time and route that they will take to conclude their march in the park El Arbolito.
This massive mobilization started since last March 8 from El Pangui, in Zamora Chinchipe. The walkers travelled through eight provinces in two weeks. So far 500 people spend the night in Uyumbicho, in the city of Mejia, located in the outskirts of Quito after travelling more than 500 kilometres.
Delegations from Esmeraldas, Sucumbios and Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas reached this point to add themselves to the so-called march “For the water, life and dignity.” This demonstration is a clear rejection from the indigenous inhabitants of Ecuador against the mining resolution of the Government. However the permit to occupy the park El Arbolito recently ended and the demonstrators still remain in the area. (AV)
