US approves first pill to help prevent HIV

Truvada: FDA Approval

Yesterday, U.S. Federal Agency Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the pill Truvada as the first drug to help prevent HIV.

An FDA statement said that this pill is for use in pre-exposure prophylaxis in combination with safer sex practices to prevent HIV infections acquired through sex with high-risk adults. Truvada is the first drug approved for this indication.

The drug has been on the U.S. market since 2004 as a treatment for people infected with HIV, indicated in combination with other antiretroviral agents.

In May, an FDA advisory panel urged to adopt the Truvada as prevention for uninfected people, after clinical trials showed that this drug can reduce HIV risk in gay men.
