Banana growth contracts at the end of the year
November 2015 was the lowest month for banana exports. The latest statistics from the Association of Ecuadorian Banana Exporters (AEBE) reveal that during November foreign sales fell by 2.64% compared to the previous month of the same year, and by 7.13% compared to 2014. Still in the accumulated of the eleven months the figure is positive (6.19 more).
However, with regard to the January-November 2014 period there is a slowdown as a result of the loss of competitiveness against other countries and by internal factors, according to producers.
Between 2013 and 2014 (from January to November) shipments rose by 17.34% (40 million additional boxes).
Late last year the government decided to improve some conditions of the producer and exporter sector. One was to reduce by $ 0.36 the price paid to the producer per box. Another variable that caused the problem was the flat tax, which was reduced for some segments, as stated in Decree 869.
