China faces Unforgiving Flood
Today floodwaters claimed the lives of 14 people, and several are still missing in the southwest of China. The country had been suffering the worst drought in 50 years. The provincial civil affairs bureau informed that the floods struck at 11 cities and counties in the Guizhou province.
Since last Friday, the floodings have destroyed homes, roads, and bridges, many cars have been washed over. Civil authorities have informed that 45,000 people were evacuated, but 3,000 remain stranded in the Wangmo county. Over 300 homes have been destroyed and 2,400 are submerged.
Meanwhile power, water supplies, and telecommunication services were also affected. Amazingly enough some stretches of the Yangtze River, which supplies 400 million people, now the river is almost dry in the southwest China’s Chongqing municipality. Near a thousand small lakes are on the brink of drying up, this has left million of people facing drinking water shortages.
