Delinquency, Sanitary, and Internal Problems inside the Sol Camp
It has been nearly three weeks of the event that started the so-called “Movimiento 15-M”, but the camping is still held in many cities of Spain. Most of all is Puerta del Sol, where there is now a community of about 150 squatters who came from all over the country and even abroad.
But the sanitary conditions within the camping are in their worst moment. The press and the health services council have been warning that an outbreak of infection may be possible in that place. Over the last week fleas, bedbugs, cockroaches, and rats have been present in the camp.
Another public health problem is the sewage system. The sewers from Puerta del Sol are close to saturation and in serious danger of collapse.
Coexistence in the camp does not go through its best moment. The early days of camaraderie have gone and apprehension, theft and accusations among the campers are evident. The latest incident was yesterday when it jumped to the media a sexual harassment complaint from the Feminist commission.
Traders from Puerta del Sol and the surrounding streets are also being affected. The sales had plummeted because of the sanitary problems and the insecurity that put customers away.
Far from diminishing the size of the settlement, it has been growing for days. Many tourists, especially foreigners, avoid crossing because they fear being robbed.
