Ecuador enters a decisive campaign for the election of Rafael Correa´s successor

Posted On 10 Mar 2017

The electoral campaign of the second round begins for the elections of April 2 started today, in which the citizens will elect the successor of the current president, Rafael Correa, who will leave office in May after governing for ten years.
The candidate of the government´s party Lenin Moreno (AP) and the opposition candidate Guillermo Lasso of the CREO party (center right) will be measured in a second round of the election, being the two most voted candidates among the eight who ran for the presidency in the first round of February 19.
The campaign will foreseeably follow the same course of the activities carried out in recent weeks by the two candidates, relentlessly dedicated to political acts despite the proselytizing period had not yet started.
The government´s party has attacked Lasso in connection with the “bank holiday,” one of the central episodes of the 1999 financial crisis, which led to the migration of two million Ecuadorians, according to AP, after the freezing of their bank deposits.
Lasso, who was the Economy Minister in the Government of Jamil Mahuad (1998-2000), denies these accusations and also that of having benefited from that situation like the administrator of a bank. The candidate accuses the government of making a “dirty campaign” against him and ensures that he offers a project of change for the country, in opposition to the continuity of the model represented by Moreno.
