Ecuador, far from legalizing abortion
Ecuador strives to comply with the recommendations of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). That body made at least six recommendations.
They have to do with the right to health of women. One of them is to decriminalize abortion in cases of rape, incest and severe or serious fetal malformations.
That suggestion, for the moment can not be met. The Minister of Justice Ledy Zuniga recognizes that this “is an issue that is not constitutionally permissible in Ecuador.” Therefore, Justice, the Judiciary, the Assembly, the Council of Participation and organizations of the civil society are working to fulfill what the Constitution establishes, she added.
