Ecuador is experiencing the worst prison crisis in recent decades
Confrontations in prisons have been perpetrated in different penitentiary centers in the region within Latin America, Ecuador, due to the last 9 massacres, is ranked third, only surpassed by the Dominican Republic with 135 deaths in 2005, followed by Venezuela with 121 murdered in 1994, the two confrontations have similarities such as the burning of pavilions inside penitentiary centers.
The bloodiest in Ecuador, setting a record in the country’s history, took place in the month of September 2021 with 118 murdered, surpassing the worst riot in Brazil with 111 that happened in 1992, and that is that deaths in detention centers they bring with them a number of consequences at a social level such as reprisals against relatives of inmates and criminal acts such as hired assassins perpetrated on citizens in the streets.
The levels of cruelty that are perpetrated in these penitentiary centers are only compared to scenes of terror and due to the exorbitant quantity and in the short time that the massacres are carried out, the population normalizes this type of violent acts that reflect the true crisis and prison acephaly that the country lives.
