Ecuadorian Referendum would be in May
The Government will abide by the complete resolution of the Constitutional Court (CC) on the adoption of the ten questions of constitutional amendment and referendum.
Yesterday, President Rafael Correa, hailed the passage of the proyect, calling it “a triumph of democracy after they have been led wiles to boycott the consultation.”
Correa said that the “(Constitutional) Court gave us the reason, because the questions were entirely constitutionals and (even) because of their right they have changed some (questions) they have not changed it in its substance. There are changes in shape, some with little fundamental changes, but with the same goal which was to take steps to improve public safety. This is not a triumph of the government but of the people,” he said.
The date of the consultation is expected to be for next May, although the final date is not defined yet.
But for Omar Simon, president of the National Electoral Council (CNE) believes that the consultation in May would “alter the traditional activities of Ecuadorians” as allMay’s Sundays are holidays including: Mother’s Day, the Labor Day, and the Holly Week.
While the ruling party and the opposition are getting prepared for the campaign, Sociedad Patriótica party has announced its refusal to the referendum and Pachakutik has also announced the campaign for the No.
