Posted On 07 Jan 2016
Despite the preventive measures and the state of emergency in force since November 18 in 17 of the 24 provinces, El Niño Phenomenon, has already begun to mark its trail of destruction and death.
Last Saturday in Guayaquil, the fall of a ceibo tree on a house in Mount Sinai (northwest of the city) caused the death of a two year old girl and her stepfather.
In Galapagos, a torrential rain flooded the Puerto Ayora-Itabaca Canal road on Monday and stopped traffic for about five hours, affecting tourism. In addition, the strength of water destroyed the bike path, flooded houses and affected sites of the protected area.
The Galapagos National Park announced yesterday that an assessment of the environmental effects was conducted. In The Twins and Salasaca there are several fallen or broken trees. Nesting areas of giant turtles have been affected, as El Chato and La Torta.
In the Isabela Island, the access to visitor sites of the Chico Volcano and Sulphur Mines “was seriously affected so the environmental authority evaluates the possibility of closure,” according to the report of the agency.
