El Universo case Could be mediated by Judge Quiroz
The soon to be former president of Second Criminal Chamber of the National Court of Justice (CNJ for its Spanish acronym), Luis Quiroz, stated that he is willing to mediate between the Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa and the directors of El Universo newspaper.
Last Tuesday, January 24, judge Quiroz explained that the cassation hearing would not be performed due to the illness of judge Enrique Pacheco. A few hours later Quiroz stated that the ideal thing would be to end the judicial process in friendly terms and that mediation would be the obvious way.
When judge Quiroz left his presidential charge in the Second Criminal Chamber, he offered, “the moment they pick the parts I can offer myself as a mediator. I am a professional mediator and arbitrator, and I can guarantee the process.”
Following the proposal made by Quiroz, on Monday, Correa said that since the beginning has been open to reach consensus as long as El Universo accepts to make a correction and recognizes what was considered an insult committed on the editorial entitled ‘No to lies’ written by Emilio Palacio. (AV)
