Fire in downtown Guayaquil
Yesterday the Bahia Mall 3 trading centre, adjacent to the San Alejo church, in Luzuriaga and Chile streets, caught fire early. About 700 firefighters and 100 units fought the incident.
According to reports, the fire started in the storage holds of easy combustion products, such as toys, clothes and shoes, owned by traders in the sector. The Chile avenue was closed from Colon to Captain Nájera streets.
Officers of the Transit Commission of Ecuador (CTE) diverted the traffic, including Metrovía buses that head south of the city, through alternate routes, in order to facilitate the entry of more firefighting units.
Employees of the Electric Company of Ecuador were also present, who helped cutting the energy in the sector to avoid short circuits that could cause major losses. The fire had been caused by a short circuit precisely, according to Julio Cesar Quinonez, governor of Guayas.
