Home of Christ seeks to raise more than $ 20 million to donate houses
Cristian Mendieta, head of the factory of the Hogar de Cristo, ordered his workers to increase the housing production, due to the destruction caused by the earthquake in northern Manabi and southern Esmeraldas.
Before the tragedy of April 16, 14 houses were produced a day and now 26 houses, of 4.80 by 4.90 meters are made. Mendieta intends to increase the quota to 50 houses per day, for which ten more workers will be hired. The factory´s structure is composed of nine sheds where the storage and production areas. Home of Christ is a non-profit organization that has built houses for marginal sectors, for 45 years.
The goal of the organization is to collaborate with 10,000 emergency homes, of two models. A traditional model, of cane and pine wood and the other, made of MDP (a special moisture resistant chipboard). According to Mendieta, these are provisional and manufactured homes.
To meet this goal the organization aims to raise at least USD 20 million to finance houses. For this, they opened accounts in the Guayaquil and Pacific banks and the Cooperative Viviendas Hogar de Cristo. They will also seek for contributions of international organizations.
From next week Home of Christ will send a group of volunteers to Manabi and Esmeraldas, to conduct studies.
