Indigenous and Businessmen Announced their Refusal against the Referendum

Posted On 25 Jan 2011

Entrepreneurs and the indigenous movement announced their opposition to the next referendum.

The Ecuadorian Business Committee requested the Constitutional Court to reject the referendum introduced last week by the Ecuadorian president, Rafael Correa, because the laws that want tobe changed go against articles 441, 442, and 444 of the constitution, which the government itself approved in 2008, the union said. According to its president, Blasco Penaherrera, if the constitutional court accepts the questions “a blow to democracy had been done.”

Meanwhile, the indigenous movement also expressed its refusal to the referendum. “This time we are going with the No,” said Marlon Santi, president of the Ecuadorian Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (CONAIE). Santi will present a protection allegation to the Constitutional Court to have the indigenous movement to oversee the process in order to prevent any incident of the government, because according to the indigenous the referendum aims to “strengthen the political totalitarian desire of the Rafael Correa’s government.”
