Inspection is declared incompetent to continue impeachment against glas
Ecuadornews:
After two hours of analysis of the agenda, Assemblywoman María José Carrión closed the session of the Oversight Committee after hearing about the proceedings in the National Assembly Plenary, this Saturday, when María Alejandra Vicuña was appointed vice president of the Republic.
Carrión announced that he will proceed to officiate the president of the Legislature, José Serrano, notifying him that the board is not competent to continue with the process of impeachment to a former vice president, in accordance with article 129 of the Constitution.
I express my “message of solidarity with the Ecuadorian people that has been betrayed by those officials involved in the corruption plot of Odebreht and who also betrayed a political project. We will continue to fight against corruption, no matter who falls and where they are, with a strong hand and a big magnifying glass to see where the clutches of corruption are.
“The table knew the letter sent, in writing, by Jorge Glas, former vice president, attaching his proofs of defense. On December 13, the former vice-president was sentenced by a court of first instance to six years in prison after a trial for illicit association related to the Odebrecht scandal, which he denies.
Carrión reported that he suspended a session of his commission scheduled for the next few hours, to which Glas had to go, with the aim of hearing the defense of the former vice-president. “The announcement” of that meeting does not make sense anymore, because the Commission lost its competence, added Carrión, who, on the other hand, suggested changes in the regulations so that in the future an ex-president or former vice-president can be prosecuted politically.
Raúl Tello, Ramón Terán, Homero Castanier and Jimmy Candell agreed that the trial of Glas began with the respective qualification of the CAL and has to conclude with a report for knowledge and final resolution in the Plenary of the National Assembly. Criterion to which Luis Pachala joined, who participated in the session despite not being at the table.
Silvia Salgado and Daniel Mendoza stated that Jorge Glas is today a common citizen and the constitutional norm speaks of the possibility of prosecuting the acting President or Vice President. Salgado requested that the evidence of charge and discharge go to the Prosecutor’s Office.
On December 2016, the US Department of Justice released a report in which it claimed that Odebrecht had paid $ 788 million in bribes to award works in twelve countries in Latin America and Africa, and in the case of Ecuador more than 35, 5 million. (I)
