Investigation of death of Jaime Roldos would reach the Vatican archives
The Attorney General´s office could even reach the Vatican archives to find clues that allow to determine the causes of the plane crash in which President Jaime Roldos, his wife Martha Bucaram and his cortège died nearly 35 years ago (May 24, 1981).
The preliminary investigation was opened in August 2013; This means it has lasted more than 29 months.
Last September, through the efforts of the diplomatic mission of Ecuador in the country, Paraguayan legal expert and researcher Martin Almada met with Pope Francis to make a request: to allow him to access the Church archives to search references to the implementation of Operation Condor (alliance of military dictatorships that ruled in the 70s and 80s) in the countries of the region, including Ecuador.
Almada, who is known for having found the so-called ‘Archives of Terror’ which documented the violations of human rights during the dictatorship in his country, has collaborated for months with the prosecution in the investigation, as one of its hypotheses is that the accident could have been an “extrajudicial execution” related to this military alliance, according to Attorney General Galo Chiriboga.
