Yaco Martinez, journalist and CEO of La Nacion, a newspaper of Tulcan, was sentenced to 30 days in jail and to cancel the amount of $ 30,000 dollars for alleged damages caused to the former Governor of Carchi, Maria Helena Villarreal.
Former District Governor sued Martinez for defamation after the journalist published an article on 2 September 2012, with the headline ‘ former political head Julio Torres assumed governance ‘.
Five days after the publication, the news led the media to uncover, through television, radio and written information, that Torres remained as political head , despite his public resignation on late June.
