Yesterday the names of the five victims who died buried and dragged by tons of mud last Monday after a landslide that occurred during a rain in the Sigchos county, in Cotopaxi, were disclosed. All the bodies were recovered yesterday.
The tragedy occurred in an area known as Cerro de Oquendo when ten workers, who had the mission to clear a clogged sewer, were preparing to leave the place because it was impossible to unclog it.
In addition to the fatalities, Monday rains caused flooding in more than eight provinces, they damaged main highways, roads, crops, homes, small businesses and left dozens of families homeless. Of these, some had to be relocated in shelters or with relatives and neighbors by being in areas considered at risk. Until yesterday, damages were still counted.
In the south of the Esmeraldas province, the collapse of at least 20 meters of the Muisne-Chamanga-Pedernales state highway caused that the Muisne county and three of its parishes can not have access with the highway that connects northern Manabi, where most of its products come from.
