Ricardo Loor: ‘Drugs are consequences, we must work on the causes’
Jorge, a medical student at a university in northern Guayaquil, drinks alcohol, smokes cigarettes and marijuana in family and social gatherings. he consumes this outside the center of studies, with the exception of cigarettes, which is his “vice,” says the 20 year old man.
The three drugs consumed by Jorge lead the National Survey on the prevalence of drug use among university students held in 2015, with a sample of 11,885 students from 33 universities in the country, according to figures from the Technical Secretariat of Drugs.
108 questions addressed the problem. At the national level the 65.09% drink or have drunk alcohol once; the 33.58% smoke cigarettes; 9.54% consume marijuana.
En la Zona 8 (Guayaquil, Durán y Samborondón) la prevalencia es de 66,69%, 32,42% y 11%, en su orden. Las provincias de Pichincha y Azuay lideran el consumo de las tres drogas. Guayas está por debajo del cuarto lugar en las dos primeras, con excepción del uso de marihuana, en el que ocupa el tercer puesto.
