Safeguards impact 80% of the volume of imports, according to Chamber of Commerce of Quito
Blasco Peñaherrera Solah, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Quito, expressed his rejection to the measure of tariff surcharges for 2800 subheadings of imported products that took effect since Wednesday.
Peñaherrera said that the measure is unconstitutional and illegitimate, and it also endangers the employment of 6.4 million people working directly and indirectly with the commercial sector.
He added that while the number of affected subheadings with the safeguard measures represents one third of the whole universe of imported products, the surcharges affect 80% of total volume of imports, since the chosen goods are the most imported.
Peñaherrera noted that currently legal instruments are being analyzed to challenge the application of tariff surcharges.
