Spain Prolongs Period for Immigrants Registration
The Spanish government decided to prolong the registration period until January 25 so that the immigrants can sign up on the census for the next municipal elections of those that reside legally in Spain, and those that come from countries with bilateral treaties.
The deadline was initially set up for January 15, but for immigrants to have more time to check it was expanded by the Spanish government. The ministerial order would be published tomorrow in the Official State Bulletin (BOE). Immigrant organizations demanded more time to complete the procedures.
This registration option for the census affects the citizens of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Norway, New Zealand, Paraguay, and Peru. On May 22 over 350,000 citizens of these countries will be able to vote on the next municipal elections.
The Office of the Electoral Census has directed personalized letters explaining the subscription procedure to foreign residents that a have a right to do it.
