Ecuadornews:
From 2014 to the present, 18 vessels (17 national and one foreign) have been captured for operating in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. The last one is Chinese ship Fu Yuan Yu Leng 999, which kept 300 tons of fish in its holds, including protected species like the hammerhead shark. Director of the Galapagos National Park Walter Bustos says that many vessels covet the archipelago catches, because these protected species develop under better biological and ecological conditions, and achieve the ideal size for commercialization.
Regarding the alert given by the Navy concerning 100 Chinese ships carrying out fishing operations near the so-called Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Galapagos Islands, Bustos said that exact figure is not precise, since the system does not operate in real time, but performs a cumulative record of several days. Currently, 400 active artisanal fishermen are working in the archipelago. (I)
