They sought that the Government accepts the collective contract as a constitutional right of public sector workers. Leaders of the Ecuadorian Labor Parliament and the United Workers Central (CUT), allied to the ruling party, met yesterday with President Rafael Correa.

They asked him to ensure “collective contracts in the Constitution and the reform that is being proposed. (But) Mr. government says that the public sector should not have collective contracts,” said Marcelo Solorzano, of the Labor Parliament.

The president of the guild, Fernando Ibarra, lamented they found no echo necessary “to make the government realize this is about fundamental rights.” He said that there is confusion as if it was about new rights that are going to be granted. This refers to the rights of trade union organizations, to collective bargaining and to strike.

He recalled that “the neoliberal Constitution of 1998 recognizes them as such.” It is unfortunate, he said yesterday, they have not been able to reach an agreement within the framework of international conventions of the International Labour Organization.

Parliament will meet in the coming hours to evaluate the conversation with President Correa. Ibarra reiterated that the bases will make decisions based on the defense of their legitimate rights enshrined in international instruments Ecuador is obliged to respect.
