Today will be decided the continuity of the Yasuní ITT initiative

Posted On 13 Aug 2013

President Rafael Correa announced yesterday, through his Twitter account, that today at a meeting in the Vice Presidency of the Republic, he will take a final decision about the Yasuní-ITT initiative.

A week ago Ivonne Baki, Chief negotiator of the Yasuni, admitted that the results are not what they expected because of the lack of contributions from developed countries.

The purpose of the initiative was to leave under the ground the oil from the fields (Ishpingo, Tambococha and Tiputini), located in the Yasuni National Park, provided the international community made a contribution of $3. 600 million (half of what the State would obtain if it exploded the oil) in the next twelve years.

However, so far the initiative only have raised more than $300 million between commitments and money already assigned.
