UN Council approved the declaration of immediate ceasefire in Gaza

During Sunday night the Security Council of the United Nations passed a unanimous statement claiming an “immediate and unconditional humanitarian ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip.

The 15 member countries of the Council met at the UN headquarters on an emergency matter and called on Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas to “fully implement” the ceasefire.

It also called for “full respect for international humanitarian law”, particularly in regard to the “protection of civilians” and advance a “durable and fully respected ceasefire based on the Egyptian proposal” of mediation.
