Posted On 23 May 2014
On last Thursday, the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) officially declared Boko Haram as a terrorist group linked to Al Qaeda, and imposed sanctions against the Islamic extremists who have carried out bloody attacks and kidnappings in Nigeria.
Nigeria, which has two years on the council, asked the commission that monitors the actions against Al Qaida, to add Boko Haram to the list of organizations linked to Al Qaida subject to an embargo of weapons and freezing of assets.
The extremist group led by Abubakar Shekau since 2010, began five years ago and has claimed the lives of thousands of Muslims and Christians, 1,500 only in 2014.
