11 soldiers were prosecuted for a death in a control in San Lorenzo; the Armed Forces will give them ‘moral’ and ‘legal’ support

Eleven soldiers are being tried for the murder of a person in Labores Agrícolas, parish of San Lorenzo canton, in Esmeraldas. According to the Armed Forces, the death of a civilian occurred after the driver of a car did not stop the march in a military control of weapons on the road and rammed the uniformed, who opened fire on Saturday March 16, 2019, on the northern border with Colombia.
In a hearing, a judge ordered that the investigated ones appear every two days before the Justice in San Lorenzo. The information was confirmed on Monday, March 18, by the Minister of Defense of Ecuador, Oswaldo Jarrín, who assured that the incident occurred in the midst of fulfilling a security task assigned to the military at the border, so the accused will have the “moral” and “legal” support of the institution.

Through a bulletin, the Joint Command of the Armed Forces (Comaco) reported that on Saturday, the 16th, early in the morning, in the Agricultural Laboratories sector, bordering on Colombia, “a military patrol complying with the current regulations, Border control and surveillance, through a military operation to control arms, ammunition and explosives, ordered a blue Toyota brand vehicle to stop, the same one that does not abide by the provisions.”
The statement adds that the driver of the vehicle accelerated to “ram military personnel,” which in this situation “makes progressive use of force in its self-defense.” The vehicle “is fleeing using alternate roads, in the direction of San Lorenzo” and “approximately two hours after the event occurred, the National Police reports on the death of one of its occupants in a health center.” (I)
