Leila Lopes, Miss Universe 2011

The Coronation of the Angolan Leila Lopes as the new Miss Universe 2011, has unleashed a wave of racist abuse through different social networks, the comments even compared her with monkeys (” King Kong’s daughter.”)

The insulting comments, written in Portuguese and English, were reported by the webside  Stormfront, whose authors do define themselves as “white nationalist community” and is under investigation for instance from the Brazilian Federal Police on suspicion of links with neo-Nazi groups.

One of the messages in English said: “She is a monkey wearing a dress? Absolutely outrageous.” While a Brazilian  posted in Portuguese: “The only thing missing is that Hollywood invites the winner for the role of King Kong’s daughter.”

Lopes, after been crowned and before known about these messages, said in a press conference not to be offended by any racist comments.

“Racism does not affect me. Racists are who should seek for help, because it is not normal that a person thinks that way in the 21th century. There are no bases for any prejudice,” said the new queen of the planet.
