Judge Paredes’ Ruling was Ratified in El Universo Case

Judge Paredes’ ruling was upheld today by the Council of the Judiciary ( in Guayaquil).  The sentence: $ 40 million and 3 years in prison for the managers of El Universo and their former opinion editor, Emilio Palacio.

President Rafael Correa wrote in his Twitter account “the sentence has been ratified, we won.”

Army officers guarded the Judicial Council in Guayaquil on Tuesday morning, just a few hours of reinstalling the hearing on appeal of The Universe case.

A pro-government group and people in favor of Diario El Universo remain outside the facilities of the court.

At the entrance to the court, Carlos Perez said “I will not flee the country and this case will be present for a long time. I also want to state that we will appeal.”
