Former Foreign Minister Fander Falconi has tweeted that “another cause that generates social inequality” is that “the rich marry each other and do not distribute wealth.”

Falconi, who is a professor at the Latin American Social Sciences Institute, has cited a blog post of Professor Geoff Riley, who in turn has referred to a book by Branko Milanovic, a professor at New York University.

Milanovic argues that one of the main forces that generate inequality in the world is what he calls “homogamy:” that the rich and the educated marry among themselves.

The other causes of inequality, according to Milanovic, would be as follows:

-The Capital inflows in all rich countries are extremely concentrated among rich people.

-The growing high income association of both capital and labor is concentrated in the hands of the same people.

– The Increasing importance of money in politics enables the rich to write the rules that favor them (including tax laws) maintaining inequality.
