Prosecutor investigates death of Argentine in Montañita

The Office of the Prosecutor announced on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, that it has begun an investigation into the death of a young Argentine in the resort of Montañita, in the coastal province of Santa Elena.

The unit of the Prosecutor’s Office in that province initiated an “administrative act to investigate the death of citizen Juan Figueroa, of Argentine nationality, occurred on April 29, 2018, in Montañita,” the Public Ministry said in a statement.

The prosecutor of the case, Santiago Cargua, ordered several proceedings that included the version of the owner and the administrators of a hostel where the victim had been staying. The fiscal agent also requested the sending of samples of vitreous humor and blood collected in the investigation to the National Institute of Public Health Research (Inspi), as well as the version of the police unit in charge of kidnappings and disappearances.

The Office of the Prosecutor has already notified the Argentine Embassy of the case and has provided the assistance requested by the respective consular agency to carry out the repatriation of the remains, added the text of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

This case reminded us of another one that occurred also in Montañita, in February 2016, when the bodies of two young Argentine tourists, Marina Menegazzo (21 years old) and María José Coni (22), who had been reported as missing, were found.

Three individuals have been condemned for the death of these young women, the last of them José Luis Pérez Castro, sentenced in September of last year to 40 years in prison. (I)
