The Judiciary wobbles three months after being named

Posted On 12 Sep 2018

Ecuadornews:

A rarefied atmosphere is perceived. A little less than three months of possession, the Transitional Judicial Council (CJ) is already investigating possible acts of corruption and there are discrepancies that, in some cases, seem insurmountable, to the point that resignations are requested.

The members of the CJ Angélica Porras and Juan Pablo Albán gave a press conference yesterday to put into perspective the tense situation that exists within the organization. They did it from the lobby of their offices and not in the auditorium where these acts of the Judiciary normally take place, “because the statements are not in the name of the Council,” the officials clarified.

The central point was to respond to what was stated by the general director of the Council of the Judiciary, Juan Vizueta, who last week demanded that Porras present evidence that he had interfered in a judicial case in Guayaquil, already acting as director, or that resigns, next to him, to defend itself in other instances.

Albán yesterday announced that, after weeks of insistence, the plenary of the CJ finally decided to investigate Vizueta and other officials who are in the exercise of their positions and who were appointed by the transitional entity.

One of the first actions was to listen to the complainants, the parents of a person who died in a traffic accident. That even caused one of the members of the Council (the name was not revealed) to leave the session as a sign of disagreement with the start of the investigation.

“Any denunciation of corruption against any person who is linked to this institution and to the judicial function in general has to be investigated. What we demand, no matter who sponsored such a person to enter or remain in the Council, has caused an adverse reaction, “said Albán.

Porras, for his part, acknowledged that the “different” position he shares with Albán regarding the way of administering justice has put them on a contrary bank in relation to the other three members of the CJ. However, he said that has not prevented them from reaching important agreements.

This sort of dissidence would be even more numerically disadvantaged since September 21 when Albán leaves the Judicial Council and resumes his doctorate studies in the United States. “That will not change my position, that I will continue to have it because that responds to my way of understanding justice and law,” said Porras.

EXPRESO looked for the version of Vizueta, but in the Judicature it was informed that the official would not give statements about the investigation that is applied to him. (I)
