Julian Assange arrested in London, Ecuador ordered the end of his asylum

Posted On 11 Apr 2019

Ecuadornews:

Julian Assange, Australian activist and founder of Wikileaks, was arrested Thursday in London after the Ecuadorian government’s decision to terminate his asylum.

In an announcement through a video, the president of Ecuador Lenin Moreno explained that the disrespectful behavior and the discourteous and threatening delays of his organization and the transgression of international agreements have taken the situation to the point that forced Ecuador to end the asylum by Julian Assange.

He recalled that Ecuador fulfilled its obligations for 6 years and 10 months and during that time it has covered the daily needs. Lenín Moreno explained that Julian Assange violated the different norms of international protocols on multiple occasions.

The Ecuadorian president said that the British government confirmed in writing, following his request, that he will not surrender Assange to a country where he could suffer torture or the death penalty.

Assange is “arrested in a police station in central London where he will continue until his appearance before the Magistrates Court of Westminster as soon as possible,” the police said in a statement.

Assange had not left the embassy since August 2012 for fear that, if he left diplomatic Ecuadorian territory, he could be arrested and extradited to the United States for the publication of thousands of military and diplomatic cables.
