The United States warns about the increase in Ecuadorian migrants

Posted On 27 Apr 2023

The Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States, Alejandro Mayorkas, expressed his concern about the increase in Ecuadorian migrants.

Latin American migrants wait outside a crossing in Mexico, given the rumor that the United States will open the border, on April 10, 2023.

Through a message on the Twitter account of the US Embassy in Ecuador, the Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States, Alejandro Mayorkas, assured that there is evidence of an increase in Ecuadorian migration to his country.

Although he did not give exact figures, Mayorkas pointed out that many of the Ecuadorians who emigrate are being deported once they cross the border.

“It’s very sad when people risk their lives and travel long distances, only to find they don’t qualify,” the US official said.

With his comment, Mayorkas refers to the new immigration policy imposed in the United States since January 2023, and which does not apply to Ecuadorians.

According to the measure, the US nation can receive up to 30,000 migrants per month from Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua and Haiti and only for humanitarian reasons.

Mexico has also reported an increase in Ecuadorian migrants at the border with the United States.

In January of this 2023, 5,808 captures of compatriots were recorded, 2,260% more than in the same month of the previous year.

While last year, according to data from the US border patrol, more than 10,527 Ecuadorians were detained at irregular crossings.
