Jorge Glas again without political rights

Former vice president Jorge Glas is once again left without political rights. This was determined by the judge of the Yaguachi canton (Guayas), Karly Vargas.

The judge revoked the precautionary measures that restored the rights of former Vice President Glas, in June 2023. That month, Judge John Rodríguez, through a court ruling, restored his political rights that allowed him to participate in popular elections.

The judicial decision, at the time, was questioned because former Vice President Glas was sentenced to six years in prison for illicit association in the Odebrecht case and eight years for the Bribery case. 

Now, Judge Vargas’ ruling details that the precautionary measures issued by Judge Rodríguez have already expired and that is why they are revoked. 

The precautionary measures that favored former Vice President Jorge Glas in June 2023 were the following: 

1. The political rights of participation to elect and be elected and to participate in matters of public interest are restored.
2. It is decided to send an attentive letter to the National Electoral Council informing about the restitution of the rights of participation to elect and be elected and to participate in matters of public interest.
3. Lift the impediments to holding a position in the public sector for Eng. Jorge David Glas Espinel.
4. Notify the Ministry of Labor, ordering that the impediment to holding public office be lifted.
5. Finally, in order to guarantee compliance and execution of the constitutional precautionary measures, it requested that the supervision of the execution of the aforementioned measures be delegated to the Ombudsman’s Office.

Today, the judge ordered that all of them be eliminated. “Notify the same institutions to which the granting of precautionary measures in favor of citizen Jorge Glas was made known, indicating that they have been revoked,” states Judge Vargas’ ruling.
