A 6,8 Earthquake Struck India
During last Sunday evening a strong quake shook Sikkim with a magnitude of 6,8 on the Richter Scale. The death toll has reached 54 casualties, 42 in India, five in Nepal and seven in Tibet, the seism left a total of a 100 injured.
Afterwards several strong tremors were felt in the North and East India, in sectors of Bangladesh and Nepal, this caused a widespread panic. The epicentre of the quake occurred at 64 km Northwest of Gangtok. The seism in Sikkim left several streets, roads and buildings with cracks.
Three aftershocks, of magnitude 5,7; 5,1; and 4,6 followed the quake in Sikkim according to the India Meteorological Department. Currently there is no electricity in Gangtok and Darjeeling. The telephone lines have also been cut in some sectors of Sikkim. (AV)
