Alexis Mera: to criminalize libel on social networks, but not media lynching
Posted On 29 Aug 2013
“It should be an administrative penalty (…) such conduct should not be punished as a crime,” said legal secretary of the Presidency of the Republic, regarding the criminalization of media lynching conceived in the Communications Law.
“I have proposed to regulate everything that could be seen as defamation in social networks because these networks can not be used as an instrument of impunity,” said Mera, while he raised some ideas for the new Crime Code, which is being developed by the Justice Committee of the National Assembly.
Mera says that the sanction “for insulting in social networks” must be equivalent to the criminal libel sanction, which is punishable with two years imprisonment in the current Crime Code.
