Arab League Demands that al-Assad Relinquish his Power
The Arab League requested on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to delegate his power to his vice president, and also that the elections are held under a “national unity government.” Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani state that the League will ask the UN Security Council to support its plan for transition.
Al-Thani also reiterated the Arab League’s demands that the violence in Syria be brought to an end, and that the political detainees be released, also that the Syrian military pull out of cities and citizens can perform demonstrations peacefully.
However, al-Thani informed that the League was taking its case to the Security Council but it was not in favor of an international military intervention. The Sheikh also announced that the Arab League’s observer mission in Syria would be extended, observers would receive additional equipment. According to the observers initial reports Syria has not fulfilled its obligations. (AV)
