Chile announced it will request explanations to Ecuador by implementation of unilateral safeguards
Chile announced through a statement it will consult Ecuador by the “unilateral fixation” of tariff safeguards, which would generate a strong impact on Chilean exports.
“The Government of Chile considered necessary, by the scale of the measure, to request formal consultations to the Ecuadorian government, in a note that will be sent to that country in the next few hours,” says the communiqué of the General Directorate of International Economic Relations (Direcon).
The measure would create a strong impact on 646 products from a total of 1,161 that Chile exported in 2014 to Ecuador and that reached 508 million dollars, 60.2% of Chilean exports last year.
Chile also noted that in its consultation note it will demand Ecuador to ensure the compliance with existing trade agreements between the two countries.
