Code Reforms Alert Chevron Claimants
Ecuadornews:
The General Code of Processes is one of the legal bodies that are on the list of reforms by the National Assembly.
On Thursday, October 4, the first day of debate was held and in it the legislators asserted that the amendment intends to have faster and more efficient judicial processes. This code, among other changes, includes new specifications on the times and qualification of judicial appeals and review in non-criminal cases.
At this point raised the concern of the agencies that group the plaintiffs of the US oil company Chevron for the damage to the nature and inhabitants of the Amazon. Pablo Fajardo, one of its representatives, assured that with the reform of the code it is intended to extend the term for the revisions of the sentences.
Currently there is a limit of five years, but we want to extend it to 10. At the discretion of Fajardo, this could mean that the sentence that forces Chevron to pay more than $ 9,000 million will be appealed and can be modified.
This sentence generated the conviction of the Court of The Hague against the country. Until the closing of this edition in the Assembly the point of the legal proposal was not addressed. (I)
