“I welcome the opening that you are giving to women in Qatar”. With those words received yesterday (Tuesday, September 2, 2018) the president of the National Assembly, the ruling Elizabeth Cabezas, to Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al-Thani, on the last of his two days of official visit to the country.
The Emir entered at about 11:00 to the seat of Parliament. The Legislative Escort formed a street of honor while floral arrangements were placed on the sides with roses of ten colors, one of the main non-oil export products of the country.
He walked across the red carpet and Cabezas greeted him at the front door, extended his hand and invited him to a private meeting in his office. There she invited him to try an espresso with Ecuadorian coffee.
Afterwards, the members of the Administration Council of the Legislature (CAL) met with him in the meeting room of the presidents of the Assembly. On the tables were arrangements of summer flowers such as astromelias and ruscus leather ferns. Also chocolate and fruits like taxo, guanabana and tree tomato.
For about 15 minutes they talked about the friendship ties between Ecuador and Qatar. The Emir invited the assembly members to visit his country. Cabezas left the script and even came to encourage the Emir to a greater representation of women in that country.
“I know that you have a Minister of Health who is a woman, which already accounts for the opening of spaces that are taking place in Qatar,” the President of the Assembly told him. Cabezas said that these “are extremely important steps to establish a much more democratic model” and told him that in Ecuador “we have made a lot of progress on women’s rights issues”.
“In fact, here you see that several of the assembly members who accompany us are women and that accounts for those possibilities and the insertion in the political and economic areas in which women can have opportunities for action,” she insisted.
The vice president of the Assembly, Viviana Bonilla, joined in this recognition, who congratulated him and congratulated him “on behalf of all the women of Ecuador and Latin America”. “Hopefully in the future we can soon see a Cabinet with more female presence,” she said, after greeting him in English.
Patricio Donoso and Luis Fernando Torres, on the other hand, told him about the investment opportunities and the bonds of friendship between the two countries. The Assembly must ratify the investment agreements that the Emir signed with President Lenin Moreno on the eve. (I)
