Ecuador Approved Tobacco Regulation and Control
104 votes from the National Assembly approved a bill for the regulation and control of smoking in Ecuador. The new bill prohibits smoking or snuff burning products in enclosed spaces such as workplaces, schools (with the exception of open spaces in higher education institutions), public transportation, public and private enclosed environments for sports.
The ban on smoking will be also for nightclubs, pubs, and clubs. The owners of these premises enabling tobacco consumption will be subject to penalties ranging from temporary closure of the establishment of up to 15 days.
Topics about prevention, early detection, and intervention on smoking will be added in the school curriculum as solicited by the law.
Tobacco companies will be required to include in the packages of their products, legends, and warning pictograms or pictures to show the harmful effects of tobacco consumption.
The project will be given to the Executive for its approval or veto, for which they will have a period time of 30-day.
