Ecuador will elect 5,682 authorities in 2019 sections

The National Electoral Council, after last Tuesday’s impasse,officially convened the sectional elections and the new members of the Citizen Participation Council for March 24 next year. Ecuador is officially at election time. 

This Wednesday, November 21, the National Electoral Council called on political groups to participate in the elections that will be held on March24. The call seemed a formality, but first the National Electoral Council hadto overcome the asperities that were among its brand new members. To get it,Diana Atamaint, Esthela Acero, Enrique Pita, Luis Verde soto and José Cabrera met in private. 

The dialogue took place all morning and even debated whether the inclusive language should be maintained in the text for the call that would bed isseminated by the media. Finally, the counselors reached an agreement, so they went to the session scheduled for 3:00 p.m. 

The first to enter the session room was José Cabrera, who joked with the press about the delay, but made it clear that the 5 members of the National Electoral Counci would attend. Minutes later they entered the hall Verdesoto and Atamaint. And later, Acero y Pita, with which the board of directors was completed. 

The first decision that the members had to make was to ratify the election of At amaint as president and of Pita as vice president. The President said that she is not afraid to disagree, that it is normal in a democracy andthat all decisions will be made with transparency and consensus. 

The vocal Cabrera continued in that same line and assured that when entering the National Electoral Council they should get rid of the shirt of the parties to don the country’s shirt. Meanwhile, Steel used the metaphor of a hand to ask for the union of the five, like the fingers that come together to be a fist. 

Verdo soto and Pita were more pragmatic. The former announced tha the would ask that an advisory council be formed with all the political groups in the country to make decisions, while the second seconded what was said butclarified that this should not hinder the decisions of the National Electoral Council. 

In the vote to ratify the authorities, Verde soto and Acero preferred to abstain, but the majority consolidated the action last Tuesday night. Then they resolved the challenges of two candidates for the Council of Citizen Participation. In that case only Steel abstained, but with this the process of challenges was closed. In total, 40 candidates, including 9 women,will seek to be part of the Participation Council with the support of the national electorate. 

The next point was the call for elections. Pita tried to debate the control of campaigns for candidates and state entities, but his idea was not accepted. The agreement was ready and with 5 votes the election was called to elect 5,682 dignitaries.
