Daily El Universo (local newspaper) released a statement today where they rejected President Rafael Correa’s demand against the newspaper for $ 80 million.
The article “No a las mentiras” (“No lies”), signed by Emilio Palacios, opinion editor of the newspaper, is the reason that originated the complaint which also includes three of the directors of the newspaper: Carlos, Cesar, and Nicolás Pérez; Correa is asking for compensation of $ 50 million and 30 million more from C.A. El Universo and 3 years in prison for each of the defendants.
“We express our strong opposition to such a groundless accusation,” El Universo published today. The newspaper considered this complaint as an “attack” in addition to “a series of official attacks that have become customary over the past four years and which undermine freedom of expression.” El Universo added that they will still keep on “investigating, reporting and reviewing what is happening in the country, the same way we have done it in the past 90 years.”
